The Series Sergeant’s best of 2018

So it took me a while to get this out, mainly because Runaways wasn’t released until late December and my binge watching days are behind me. So, without further ado, let us jump into my picks for the best movies and shows of 2018!

Best TV show featuring a mostly adolescent cast: The Runaways.
Season 2 finds us directly following the events of season 1 with the Runaways actually running away, and their parents trying to love them despite being sociopaths. James Marsters, Julian McMahon, and soon to be every teenage girl’s fantasy, Gregg Sulkin, shine in the latest Marvel adaptation.
Both seasons of The Runaways are available now on HULU

Best Grown-Up TV Show: The Haunting of Hill House.
The Haunting of Hill House, based on the novel of the same name, is in all honesty, a masterpiece. The level of detail is outstanding with every episode featuring spooky easter eggs and dramatic performances. The entire cast is perfect. There is nothing to complain about here, except that they are making a season 2, which will ruin everything.

Best Movie I’m ashamed to like: Bumblebee.
The Transformers franchise was supposed to be dead with Michael Bays previous installment, The Last Knight, it sucked. HARD. It seems, however, that the issue is not talking robots that turn into cars, it was Michael Bay. Hailee Steinfeld (who I have a hard time accepting is the girl from True Grit) shines in this latest installment. Travis Knight deserves to make every future installment from here on out and needs the next movie to pull a “JJ Abrahams” and use a time machine to start over.
Bumblebee is in theaters NOW.

Best Movie that should have sucked but didn’t: Aquaman
Aquaman‘s premise is ridiculous. He’s a dude that talks to fish. The movie should have stunk but it was actually awesome. Read my “Spoiler Rich Review of AquamanHERE

Best Movie: Spiderman – Into The Spiderverse.
Bravo SONY. This my pick for best movie of 2018 simply because it dares to be unique in an oversaturated market. It is visually beautiful and the trailers were misleading us into thinking it wasn’t going to be. Between the subtle comic print overlay through the entire duration of the movie, the brilliant pairing of Jake Johnson and Shameik Moore, and the fact that as you watch you forget its a cartoon, firmly plants this as my must see of 2018.

Best TV Show: Daredevil.
I know I said The Haunting of Hill House was the best “Grown-Up TV Show” but essentially I created that to talk about a fantastic show. Daredevil, however, was more than a superhero show, it was a show about redemption. Everyone in the 3rd outing displayed better performances than previous seasons, specifically Charlie Cox, who never sold me as Daredevil until this season. He was simply fantastic. Every scene featuring Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is pure gold. If Kevin Feige was considering saving one character from the NETFLIX cancellation guillotine, Daredevil should be it… And then Punisher.
All 3 seasons of Daredevil are available on NETFLIX.
