Hello all, J The Comic Creep here and it looks as if that glorious day is upon us once again, New Comic Book Day! My favorite day of the week! The Creep’s Comic Book Compendium is a list and brief commentary of new comic books that I will be picking up this week. As always, there’s lots of new stuff to get excited about: The Punisher doesn’t want to give up his new toy (AKA the War Machine Armor!), Batman is about to strangle Booster Gold with his bare hands and Leonardo and the Turtles are sitting down with some seriously shady characters! Now, let’s go grab a grip o’ funny books!
Ether: The Copper Golems #1 – Written by Matt Kindt with art by David Rubin
My Creep of the Crop pick of the week! This book looks INCREDIBLE! Portals between Earth and another dimension begin to tear open all around the globe. A team of magical malcontents is assembled to deal with the problem and the creepy crawlies that come barging through.
Aquaman #36 – Written by Dan Abnett with art by Ricardo Federici and Howard Porter
The whole Corin Rath vs Aquaman thing has been dragging on for a while now but the stakes just changed last issue. Rath has transformed himself into a monstrous sea creature oozing with Atlantean magic. Is it finally enough to put Arthur and his band of rag tag revolutionaries in their place?
Batman #47 – Written by Tom King with art by Sandu Florea and Tony S. Daniel
In a totally misguided but well intended gift to Bruce Wayne, Booster Gold continues to totally muck up the time stream with pretty much everything he does. The more he tries to fix things, the more calamity ensues. How bad will things get this time around and will things happen that will be irreversible?
Justice League: No Justice #2 – Written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Joshua Williamson with art by Marcus To and Francis Manapul
After Amanda Waller busted poor Brainiac’s melon in the last issue, the heroes became a little discouraged. There’s an unstoppable god/planet eater out there and he’s coming for earth! Brainiac seemed to be the only one with any kind of strategy against this menace but, well now he’s got a cracked noggin!
Teenage Mutand Ninja Turtles #82 – Written by Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman with art by Brahm Revel and Kevin Eastman
The “Kingdom of Rats” arc continues in this issue! In the last issue, the Rat King began his invasion and started to take the city right out from under the Turtles and the Foot Clan. Everyone is scrambling around trying to figure out what to do and in a last ditch effort, the Turtles turn to an unlikely source for help!
Dead Hand #2 – Written by Kyle Higgins with art by Stephen Mooney
Last month’s issue was SO GREAT and it set thing up in a BIG way. A violent Russian cold war operative was now living peacefully as the Sheriff of a small isolated town. He has apparently left the life of espionage well behind him. That is until a mysterious stinky hobo stumbles into town knowing things about the good sheriff he thought were long buried with his past!
Gideon Falls – Written by Jeff Lemire with art by Andrea Sorrentino
Things aren’t looking good for new resident of Gideon Falls, Father Fred! He’s being accused of murder in a small town and of course here aren’t any witnesses. And Dr Xu is finally beginning to believe Norton’s crazy stories. How will these stories connect? What is with that creepy black barn appearing out on nowhere in the middle of the city? Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino turn the spook up to 11!
Avengers #2 – Written by Jason Aaron with art by Ed McGuinness
Odinson Thor, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers get rudely interrupted while they’re reminiscing about the glory days and getting tanked up at their local watering hole. Black Panther and Dr. Strange go poking around and stumble upon some weird happenings far beneath the earth’s surface. Will the new team finally come together in this issue?
Cable 157 – Written by Lonnie Nadler and Zac Thompson with art by German Peralta and Daniel Warren Johnson
After a brief flashback in the last issue detailing when they first encountered the new Techno-monster that’s now after them, Hope and Cable fins themselves in a heap of trouble. I didn’t see this coming but apparently X-Man makes an appearance? Don’t know who that is? Go read Age of Apocalypse!
Captain America #702 – Written by Mark Waid with art by Leonardo Romero, Howard Chaykin, Rod Reis and Michael Cho
In A bizarre flashback in the last issue, we follow descendents of Cap’s far into the 24th century. where it’s discovered in a government conspiracy that the whole super soldier program was helped along by the Kree! Oh and apparently Nazi’s loved Coke-A-Cola! What does this mean for our present day Steve Rogers? Not sure but I feel a reveal coming any moment!
Daredevil # 602 – Written by Charles Soule with art by Mike Henderson and Chris Sprouse
New Mayor Matt Murdock wants to clean up Hell’s Kitchen. With The Kingpin still out of the picture it might not be that hard. But when the Hand declares war against you, now that will put a damper on things!
Hunt for Wolverine: The Claws of a Killer # 1- Written by Mariko Tamaki with art by Butch Guice and Greg Land
Apparently now Wolvie’s enemies join the X-Men and the Avengers in searching for his carcass! But I don’t think this is a good thing. Apparently they want old fur face to stay six feet under if he is up and around again. Hopefully they’re not the ones that find his old bones first!
Infinity War Countdown: Daredevil #1 – Written by Gerry Duggan with art by Chris Sprouse, Phil Noto, Lee Ferguson and Clayton Crain
As the title suggests, this is a book that is going to somewhat relate to this summer’s big “Infinity War” Marvel comics crossover. Apparently the Mind Stone ends up in Dare Devil’s hood and it’s putting the whole city in danger! What can DD really do about it though, is he strong enough to take on an Infinity Stone all by his lonesome?
Mighty Thor: Gates of Valhalla #1 – Written by Jason Aaron with art by Ramon K. Perez, Jen Bartel and Nick Derington
This issue is said to be not only a touching memorial for Jane Foster (spoilers, she’s deader than a doornail) but it also sets up the upcoming Jason Aaron Odinson Thor series. Which I am super excited about! I was a loyal reader of Mighty Thor reader with Jane Foster but I’ve missed me a good Odinson tale!
The Punisher #224 – Written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Stefano Landini and Clayton Crain
After Nick Fury lends Frankie the War Machine armor for a secret mission, but now the Punisher is coming home with the armor and people are waiting for him to give it back. Some pretty powerful people I might add. Are things going to get ugly? If Frank Castle is involves, the answer it YES!
X-Men Wedding Special #1 – Written by Marc Guggenheim, Kelly Thompson, Chris Claremont with art by Greg Land, Cresta, Marika, Todd Nauck and J. Scott Campbell
All things Kitty and Colossus! As Pioter and Kitty’s big day draws near, this issue celebrates everything we love about these two characters. And there’s no better person to do celebrate this than the X-Master Chris Claremont himself!
Bloodshot #9 – Written by Jeff Lemire, Ray Fawkes with art by Renato Guedes and Kenneth Rocafort
In this issue we take a break from the action and get the origin of Bloodshots trusty pal Bloodhound! We find out what the poor pooch went through early on at the hands of Project Rising Spirit during WWI. What made Bloodhound a fearsome indestructible weapon? Find out here!
Ninja-K #7 – Written by Christos Gage with art by Juan Jose Ryp and Tonci Zonjic
New story arc! Ninja-K finds out a mysterious figure thought long dead is amassing a formidable army, more than he can handle. So Ninja-K gathers heroes from across the Valiant universe to help him figure out or possibly take down these suber big bads! Sounds like things are about to escalate pretty quickly!
