Ghostbusters 2020: Passing the Torch

So with the recent hoax of #BillMurray in his #Ghostbusters uniform, I searched the Internet to see if there was any other news surrounding the recently announced 2020 sequel.

Ernie Hudson has said that this movie will be a “passing of the torch” which in my opinion should have been the objective of the 2016 movie instead of ignoring the original timeline.

So keeping Ernie’s remarks in mind, I started to think about who I would like to see carry the franchise into the future. My picks would follow the current model, A Nerdy Engineer (Harold Ramis, Kate Mckinnon), A Smart Ass (Bill Murray), An Over-Zealous Dreamer (Dan Aykroyd, Melissa McCarthy), The Reluctant One (Kristen Wig), The One That’s Only There For The Paycheck (Ernie Hudson, Leslie Jones), The Receptionist A: Sarcastic (Annie Potts) B: The Idiot (Chris Hemsworth), and The Damsel In Distress (Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis). Now you will notice that a lot of these actors are TV actors, this is because, in keeping with the tradition of the three previous movies and the hiring of SNL actors, I would think that an effort would be made to keep that alive. With that being said, here are my picks for a new generation of Ghostbusters:

The Nerdy Engineer: Many of us who saw 2016’s Ghostbusters would agree that Kate McKinnon was a rare highlight of Paul Feig’s film. Even if the writers didn’t give her much to work with, she made it work. It’s almost a shame that that continuation has ended because we lose her and Chris Hemsworth in the process. Now, this actor would have to be believable and able to step into the role as a Ghostbuster because they would not have a mentor, due to the unfortunate passing of Harold Ramis. I have a couple of ideas for this depending on the tone of the film.

paul bettany

Paul Bettany (He almost retired from movies before thaking the role of Jarvis and Vision in the MCU, thank goodness he didn’t. See A Knights Tale)

tom hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston (Okay so he tried Kong: Skull Island, and it appears it didnt work because I haven’t seen him anywhere in the new Godzilla movie trailer. Also, he **SPOILER** dies in Avengers: Infinity War, so I think his schedule has opened up. (See The Night Manager and Crimson Peak)

 jay baruchel

Jay Baruchel (His career spans over so many different spaces. He’s the writer and Director of Goon 2 and voices a main character in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise. See This Is The End and Undeclared)

andrew garfield

Andrew Garfield (Because I actually liked his version of both Spiderman and Peter Parker. See Hacksaw Ridge and The Social Network)

The Smart Ass: This would have to be someone that’s not on the same IQ level as the “Nerdy Engineer” or the “Overzealous Dreamer” but is intelligent in his or her own right. He or she would use their deficiency and replace it with humor. This role is vital to nail because they will most likely be the highlight of the movie much like Bill Murray was and was also intended for Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon to share in the Paul Feig reboot.

donald glover childish gambino

Donald Glover (He is awesome, his limited role in Spiderman Homecoming, was a fan favorite. See Community, Mystery Team, and Atlanta)

Paul Rudd.jpg

Paul Rudd (I think you will start noticing a few of Marvel’s past and present on this list. See Ant-Man, Prince Avalanche, and The Fundamentals of Caring)

jonah hill

Jonah Hill (Because I think he’s a smart ass in real life. See Superbad, War Dogs, and This Is The End)

steve zahn

Steve Zahn (I am not really taking into account anyone’s age here, I’m not sure how old he is, I just love Saving Silverman. See Sahara)

The Over-Zealous Dreamer: You will notice a theme here. These actors all have very bubbly personalities or have played a similar character but can also pass for someone who is educated. This is Dan Aykroyd’s and half Melissa McCarthy’s roles. There will come a point in the movie where the cards are stacked against the Ghostbusters and this character will be there to put the pieces together.

nick frost

Nick Frost (just because I love him, I mean, who doesn’t? See Sick Note and The Cornetto Trilogy)

hailee steinfeld

Hailee Steinfeld (Played the same role as in Pitch Perfect but this will need to be more intelligent. See Bumblebee, True Grit, and The Edge of Seventeen)

ellie kemper

Ellie Kemper (Again, the same role as The Office but intelligent. See Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Bridesmaids)

damon wayans jr

Damon Wayans JR (Has a childlike persona that is evident in New Girl and Happy Together, it’s infectious, side note: Why aren’t more people watching Happy Together? See Let’s Be Cops, Happy Endings, and Big Hero 6)

adam devine

Adam Devine (see Damon Wayans. See Workaholics, Mike and Dave NWD’s, When We First Met, That blink-182 music video reboot of What’s My Age Again?)

The Reluctant One:I feel like this role was specifically created for Kristen Wigg because she doesn’t really fit the original roles. Her strength in comedy is her awkwardness, I feel like she was originally intended to be a Venkman type character but was made to fit her personality. This role could be fun because it’s the only one that you can make completely your own.

jim parsons

Jim Parsons (I’d like to see him star in more movies, with The Big Bang Theory ending, he will have more time. See Hidden Figures and The Muppets)

elijah wood

Elijah Wood (What’s he doing? Those The Lord of the Ringresidual checks are probably great but this guy needs a new franchise. See Wilfred and Cooties)

Miles Teller.jpg

Miles Teller (Needs a redemption movie after Fantastic 4, see Whiplash or War Dogs, this guy deserves another shot. See Whiplash, War Dogs, and That Awkward Moment)

jake johnson

Jake Johnson (He is hilarious and a star after Spiderman – Into The Spiderverse and Tag, put him in a movie he can shine in. See New Girl, Jurassic World, and Let’s Be Cops)

Alison Brie.jpg

Alison Brie (Reunite with Donald Glover from Community? Sign me up. See Glow and Mad Men)

The One That’s Only There For The Paycheck (busting sarcasm more than ghosts):

milo ventimiglia

Milo Ventimiglia (His role in the unnecessary Rocky Balboa was a highlight and has found a second wave after Heroes with This Is Us, damn you Crockpots!)

kat dennings

Kat Dennings (The king of playing characters who don’t really care about much of anything. See Thor and 2 Broke Girls)

michael b jordan

Michael B Jordan (if WB’s newly signed contract will let him step away to do it. We’ve all seen his big tent pole movies, See Fruitvale Station, you’re welcome!)

Richard Ayoade.jpg

Richard Ayoade (Mainly for the excuse to put him in a movie. See The I.T. Crowd or Travel Man. Oh, and BTW, because of my love for him, you will see his name listed one more time on this list.)

The Sarcastic Receptionist: you need this person to be complementary to the group. Chris Hemsworth was the best part of the reboot and Janine is a fan favorite and just as much of a Ghostbuster as the boys.

richard ayoade

Richard Ayoade (Didn’t think you’d see him that soon, did you? Se something else he’s done, I’m sure it’s great)

Kenan Thompson.jpg

Kenan Thompson (Because he’ll leave SNL eventually… right? See Kenan and Kel)

Chris Hemsworth.jpg

Chris Hemsworth (he was awesome, just recast him and be done with it. See anything, he or Chris Pratt is probably in it. Movie idea! The Triple Threat Chris Movie, starring Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans, see it will work because movies with a Chris in it make a billion dollars. Throw in Ryan Reynolds and Sam Jackson and it will make 2 billion. See Thor, The Avengers, and In The Heart of the Sea)

dave franco

Dave Franco (Because he’s the cheaper Franco brother. See The Disaster Artist; make sure you’re watching the right Franco)

1810700 _CA_sneaks_chris_pratt_RRD_

Chris Pratt (See Chris Hemsworth)

The Damsel In Distress: Every movie about heroes needs a victim they are trying to save right? This was Susan Sarandon in the original, but I think we would all agree, Rick Moranis was better. It would be awesome if he came out of retirement for this one:

michael cera

Michael Cera (I’d really like to see him in something different, he’s shown his range with his indie films and is really funny when he tries. See This Is The End and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World)

jon heder

Jon Heder (No real reason other than it might work. See Napoleon Dynamite and Benchwarmers)

dax shepard

Dax Shepard (C.H.I.P.S sucked, he’s funny, help him out. See Idiocracy and The Ranch)

Danny Mcbride.jpg

Danny McBride (Is anyone else sad that the Dundee movie isn’t real? Other than this headshot that looks like a mugshot, see This Is The End, Eastbound and Down, or Vice Principals)

Craig Robinson.png

Craig Robinson (Ghosted was canceled way too soon, but maybe this is his opportunity to bust some ghosts again? See the aforementioned and This Is The End)

Anna Kendrick.jpg\

Anna Kendrick (She’s just fun, her twitter is hilarious, and she will get my wife excited about this movie. See A Simple Favor, Table 19or Pitch Perfect.)

So what’s your consensus Crunchers? How excited are you for a new Ghostbusters? This list was really hard to build and I’m sure you have some awesome ideas! Sound off below?

The “Untitled Ghostbusters Project” is slated to release in 2020. Directed by Jason Reitman, son of the original director, Ivan Reitman. Written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.

  1. Why do you keep using the word “dame” like it is a male version of damsel? A dame is a nobility title, that is analogous to knighthood.
