Sunday night the BBC did something that to my knowledge had been done only once before, released a new episode of Doctor Who simultaneously around the world at the same time (the previous time was with 2013’s 50thAnniversary Special “The Day of the Doctor”). Sunday’s episode was the premiere for the 13th incarnation of the Doctor portrayed by Jodie Whittaker. Warning, spoilers of “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” below.
!!!WARNING SPOILERS BELOW!!!
“The Woman Who Fell to Earth” was written by new showrunner Chris Crimball and was used to introduce the new Doctor, her 3 companions and a new alien bad guy. Crimball is a veteran of the Russell T. Davies era of the show and this episode had a feel for those early days of the reboot. While searching for a mysterious alien who is killing humans; and taking teeth as a trophy, the new Doctor is struggling with the effects of regeneration, not having a sonic screwdriver and learning her new companions.
It the companions who are the highlight of the episode itself. Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yas (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh) each compliment the Doctor in unique ways and balance each other in a perfect way. The show had the feel of any other Doctor Who episode from years past, even though a new protagonist is being introduced. Over the years the Doctor has become dependent on a sonic screwdriver, since the last one was destroyed the new Doctor melts down spoons and uses alien technology found in a warehouse to build a new, unique looking one.
