The news of Venom’s rating have been all over the place. First it was a hard R, then it was up in the air, then the word was that it would be PG-13 in order to be more franchise ready. Well, the franchise ready side won out. Per a listing on the AMC Theaters website, the film will be rated PG-13 with a run time of 1 hour 52 minutes.
This tun time is pretty typical for a superhero flick but I admit I’m torn on the rating. With the success of Fox’s Logan and Deadpool, I was sure Sony would follow suit with Venom. On the one hand, it’s great to see an open door for Spider-Man to join this franchise and on the other is a disappointment that the character is being toned down.
To be fair, Venom was in the cartoons, and it was fine, but it’s a different world now. Fans of the 90’s cartoon are adults now and enjoy the gritty nature of the character and the tone and R rating can bring. Perhaps Sony has made the right call but I’m on the fence.
