Ninjak #11 (New Arc) Review

As the Valiant universe is recovering from the events of Harbinger Wars 2, Ninjak is on a personal quest to save his best friend, Gilad, the Eternal Warrior.  Gilad’s soul is taking time in the afterlife to spend with his departed family (Read about it in a previous title, Wrath of the Eternal Warrior). He left his body in the care of XO Manowar, who then abandoned earth. It is now inhabited by the Undying One, an immortal entity that inhabits a new body when the life of the old is ended.

MI-6, Ninjak’s frequent employer, has told him that they will only provide the location of the Undying One if he agrees to help them find his friend and former fling, Livewire, and help bring her to justice. He reluctantly agrees and takes off for Chernobyl, the location of the Undying One.  There he finds a number of people living happily near the deadly site.

It seems these people have aligned themselves with the Undying One in exchange for treatments that keep them alive.  Ninjak manages to put himself in their shoes and can’t help but view them as innocents desperate enough to take help from whoever is giving it. He doesn’t want to hurt these people and that complicates his mission.Ninjak-Dr-Silk

This is a new story arc in the Ninjak series and as such is simply a beginning.  It’s almost difficult to judge it based on a single issue, however it manages to set up the potential of an epic clash between Ninjak and the Undying One while also weaving in a couple of secondary dilemmas for the hero to deal with.  He has to figure out how to accomplish his mission without harming the desperate innocents now fighting for the enemy as well as determine whether or not he’s really going to turn in his friend, Livewire.

I’ve always enjoyed the Ninjak series for it’s fast-paced espionage stories, but much like most of the Valiant heroes, Ninjak is much more than a spy.  This comic reveals a new side to the once cold mercenary, his personal relationship with Livewire has softened him, and has caused him to consider the collateral damage of his actions.  This particular story, while only a beginning, is certainly interesting and the artwork is fine, though falls a bit short of other Valiant titles. All in all a good read and certainly an interesting entrance into the world of Ninjak.
