Why Red Dead Redemption 2 Isn’t Going to Kill All Other Games

Today we got another look at Rockstar’s upcoming game Red Dead Redemption 2. The Grand Theft Auto developers are one of the best developers in gaming and know how to make great games. GTA V is consistently the top selling games every month and it came out in 2013. That’s extremely impressive.

Even still there is buzz around Red Dead 2 being the mamoth game this year and prominent gaming personalities stating that it’s unwise to release anything else around its release date, October 26 of this year. While Red Dead is sure to be a massive hit AND likely the best selling game this year, I don’t think it’s going to hurt other games in a big way.

For instance, CD Projekt Red has confirmed they will be sharing information on an RPG this year at E3. This is likely Cyberpunk 2077 which they have been working on for over half a decade. Due to the studio’s relationship with the Polish government, they need to release the game no later than 2019. Well it’s entirely possible it’ll come out this year even if unlikely. If Cyberpunk were to release the same time as Red Dead I really don’t think it would be doomed to fail. Red Dead may outsell it but it would be fine. CD Projekt Red’s last game, The Witcher 3, is one of the best games ever made and still extremely popular. It had deep RPG mechanics, amazing side quests, a well told story and offered hundreds of hours of content. Something that massive isn’t going to be derailed by Red Dead Redemption 2.

I loved Red Dead Redemption and look forward to seeing more in the sequel but it isn’t GTA level popular. It will bring in hardcore gamers and casual but not in the same droves as GTA.

In the meantime, check out the latest trailer below.
