The Fate of Batfleck

Welcome Crunchers! It’s time to turn on the Bat Signal and hope that Batfleck comes back for another round! I was highly skeptical of Ben Affleck taking up the mantle of one of the most iconic comic book heroes of all time, and I still wasn’t really sure about him after Batman Vs. Superman, just because I didn’t feel like it took a lot of talent to play the role only ranging from brooding man to rage monster. However, I might be a minority on this, but I really enjoyed Justice League. I thought that the Bruce Wayne and Batman alter Egos both had a lot more depth, were more enjoyable, and Affleck did a great job portraying them.

The problem is that it is up in the air as to whether or not Ben Affleck is going to reprise his role. I don’t really get why. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play Batman? Not only that, but to get paid millions to do it? I would play Batman for the simple payment of the personal trainer that would get me in freaking awesome shape to play the role. Affleck has been really wishy washy about his decision to come back, but it sounds like he is waiting on the right script. I guess that is good in a way, as a respect to the character, wanting to make sure that the movie is done right is super important. However, the DCEU has a lot of fans that want him to come back. It would be a let down to a lot of us if he decides not to return. I’m sure that there is a timetable for Affleck to make his final decision. Let’s hope a worthy script comes his way before that timetable is up.

So then the question remains, what if he doesn’t come back? How will Batman continue? Will they simply recast and pull another Keaton to Kilmer routine? Jake Gyllenhaal’s name has been brought up as a possible replacement if they go that route.  Or will they possibly go for something more complex? There are some different ideas that have been floating around the internet, here is a list of a few.

  1. One idea is that Batman will enter the Lazarus pit that Ra’s al Ghul uses for healing and long life, and would come out a younger man, opening the character up to be taken over by a younger actor.
  2. Another Idea is that Batman has secretly been devising a way to clone himself, but at his prime age. Once again bringing in a younger Batman.
  3. Flashpoint is certainly on the list. DC is already planning a Flashpoint movie, with Barry doing his thing, messing up the planet. When Flashpoint gets somewhat fixed, the world doesn’t exactly go back to the way that it was. This can create an opportunity for them to change Batman in a number of ways, including once again, his age. A side note on Flashpoint, Thomas Wayne is Batman in this alternate reality. I wouldn’t mind seeing Michael Keaton reprising the role as an older Thomas Wayne version of Batman.

Whatever they choose, it will be interesting to see. Let’s hope they don’t blow it. What do you think Crunchers? Do you have any other theories? Do you want Batfleck to return, or would you like to see one of these other options? Let us know in the comments below!
