The Empire Strikes Back

In 1980 20th Century Fox released it’s follow up to the 1977 surprise hit “Star Wars” with the 2nd movie in the original trilogy, “The Empire Strikes Back.”  Set 3 years after the events of the first movie, we find the heroes from the destruction of the Death Star, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca, now key leaders for the rebels.  In addition to Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2, we are reunited with Yoda and we meet Lando Calrissian.  We also see the bounty hunter, Boba Fett for the first time since the battle of Geonosis in “Attack of the Clones” who joins forces with Darth Vader.

Since the Star Wars universe has been expanded with the prequel trilogy, “Empire” serves as the episode that binds the saga together as the Galactic Empire is at it’s peak of power while Luke and Han recognize who they are and the role they are to play in the destruction of that Empire, restoring freedom to that galaxy far, far away.

With it’s action scenes, Jedi training, characters falling in love (without horrible dialog – I’m looking at you Anakin and Padme) and of course the huge reveal of Luke’s heritage, “Empire Strikes Back” is the best of the 7 saga films.  Just as Han Solo responded with “I know” when Princess Leia confesses her love to him, this movie does so when fans confess that this is the Star Wars movie that all others are weighed against.
