Review: Supergirl “Girl of Steel”

The first episode of Supergirl aired last week and I just had the chance to watch it. It starts off very dark to where I was wondering if I was watching a Zack Snyder film. Supergirl is extremely damaged by the events surrounding Mon-El leaving earth. She feels the weight of making him leave and it has damaged her greatly. Gone is Kara Danvers and in her wake, only Supergirl remains.

Supergirl is working overtime here with little to no Kara to be seen and her friends are tired of it. They implore her to see reason and come back to them while realizing that she has a right to grieve having lost the lost of her life due to decisions she made.

When all is said and done, the episode was well paced and interesting. We are introduced to Morgan Edge played by Adrian Pasdar, an evil businessman who obviously represents certain ideologies within the political realm. Once again, Supergirl is getting too political and it broke some of the fourth wall for me. That said, Edge is truly a nasty and hate-able guy but it felt a bit too much like they were trying to tie him to certain political mindsets that exist today. It felt divisive and left a bad taste in my mouth. Further, it made the villain seem less sinister and threatening. Supergirl really needs to get away from pushing a political campaign. It’s hurting their storytelling.

Even still, the episode was great. Supergirl faced off against an every day human who was clever and stole some alien tech to use to his advantage. As we know, the badguy always loses and there is no exception here. Supergirl came out on top in heroic fashion. I was impressed by the end of the episode and the heroics Supergirl displayed.

In summary, Supergirl is off to a great start. Kara comes back at the end and all appears to be going well for the Girl of Steel and her friends. We all know there is drama to come and more villains to face but ultimately there is fun to be had here on Supergirl. Despite a underwhelming and overly politically charged villain in Morgan Edge, Supergirl pulled out a good episode this week. I hope they improve and take out the agenda in upcoming episodes and focus on making great content rather than sending a message.
