There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the casting of Jodie Whittaker to play the thirteenth incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Until now the hottest debate Whovian’s had about the new incarnation was whether or not he would be ginger. Outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat made a joke out of that in Matt Smith’s first appearance of the Eleventh Doctor in “The End of Time.”
New show runner Chris Crimball has made the decision that it was the Doctor’s turn to be a Time Lady, following in the footsteps of the Master. It is anyone’s guess Whittaker can pull this off as masterfully as Michelle Gomez did is yet to be seen. In an interview with Radio Times, Moffat has said that her initial scenes for this year’s Christmas special “Twice upon a time” have been filmed. Since we are still four months away from seeing her on screen for the first time in this role one can only guess at how she will do.
To be honest, I have doubts if Whittaker can capture the quirkiness that each Doctor has had before. Can she become a “mad woman in a box?” I want to be wrong and come to love this incarnation as I have with the twelve previous ones. We can’t put too much into the few seconds that we will see in “Twice upon a Time” this Christmas and will need to wait until the fall. Even with my doubts, I am excited to see what happens and I am hoping for the best.
